Until recently, language education pedagogy insisted that only the target language be used in instruction. This was the case regardless of type of student population or program model. But recently, scholars have begun to question this assumption, insisting that more flexible teaching strategies are needed. This presentation will review the theoretical concept of translanguaging, the current of language practices that characterize language classrooms today. It will also show how teachers can leverage these different practices, in both instruction and assessment, to develop the students’ bilingualism and in particular the ways of using language sanctioned by schools.
About the presenter
Ofelia García is Professor in the Ph.D. program of Urban Education and of Hispanic Literatures and Languages at The Graduate Center, CUNY (City University of New York). She has been Professor of Bilingual Education at Columbia University´s Teachers College and Dean of the School of Education at Long Island University. García’s publication record on bilingualism and the education of bilinguals is grounded in her life experience living in New York City after leaving Cuba at the age of 11, teaching language minority students bilingually, and educating bilingual and ESL teachers. Among her best-known books is Bilingual Education in the 21st century: A global perspective. She is co-editor of Language Policy and Associate General Editor of The International Journal of the Sociology of Language. Her website is www.ofeliagarcia.org.
