Around the globe every year, second language learners enter educational systems with the best of intentions to serve linguistically diverse children and youth, nevertheless, they are often ill equipped to serve them - especially in the face of entirely new skills needed for twenty-first century learners.
To be literate in the twenty-first century, learners need specific and qualitatively different dispositions compared with the 20th century, such as: design competencies; an ability to work across public, private, local, and global spaces; and skills to curate across multiple genres of digital and non-digital texts. For students who are racially and linguistically diverse, it can be particularly difficult to navigate these converged, hybrid digital spaces, not to mention learning more traditional skills associated with reading and writing.
In this keynote, I will identify four new areas of literacy research and pedagogical orientations that hold great promise for reconceptualising teaching and learning with language learners in the twenty-first century:
- featuring teaching approaches to digital and non-digital texts based in affect and embodiment theory;
- viewing educating children and youth as modally flexible and as involving co-production practices;
- explicitly and critically teaching twenty-first century skills that render language and cultural divides as an asset; and,
- raming primary and secondary language teaching as engagements with social and material worlds.
To illustrate each strand of new, transformative teaching methodologies, I will draw on my own research alongside the research of others. My hope is that each illustration will point to some of the ways that we can reimage literacy lives as pedagogies of possibility.

Jennifer Rowsell är verksam lärarutbildare vid Brock University, Canada där hon innehar professuren Research Chair in Multiliteracies. I sin forskning har hon intresserat sig för digitaliseringens påverkan på läs-, skriv- och litteracitetsutveckling och undersökt lärande i digitala miljöer som spel, sociala medier och filmskapande.
